Trail Crew Leader Training

This exciting training is a must for anyone interested in leading volunteers in trail projects!

Dates: 05/15/2021 – 05/16/2021

Time: Saturday – 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM & Sunday – 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Payment Amount: $100.00

Payment Description:

Training Cost: $100. OSI trainings are offered for a nominal fee to cover materials and the cost of instructors. The courses are limited in size to ensure effectiveness and often fill quickly. Spots are not solidified until payment is received in full. Full refunds are given only for cancellations made at least 7 days or more prior to the training. Meals are not included. 

The training is available at a discounted rate of $65 to anyone who meets the following criteria:

Volunteered on 2 or more VOC projects in the past year AND
Commit to volunteering as a Crew Leader Trainee on VOC projects in 2021

This course is ideal for those with prior trail experience and is ideal for those interested in leading volunteer crews on trail projects; those interested in leading volunteer crews for any organizations may register.

We greatly appreciate you volunteering your time and energy to care for Colorado’s outdoor places during COVID-19. To help provide a fun and safe experience for all, there are a few temporary changes to be prepared for:

  • You must provide your own food and, if desired, overnight accommodations. VOC will not be providing lodging or meals at this time.
  • You must bring a face mask and work gloves. Please click here for our full packing list of required and recommended items.
  • Cancellation & Waitlists: Due to this year’s limited number of trainings and trainee spots, we expect trainings to fill quickly with waitlists. If you need to cancel, please email outreach@voc.org as soon as possible so we can free your spot for another trainees.
​Where You’ll Be:
This course includes a self-paced, online portion that must be completed prior to attending the in-person training in the Edwards or Eagle area. Final location information will be sent to registered trainees within two weeks of the course date. 
 
What You’ll Do:
In this two-day workshop, you will join a small class to receive hands-on training in effective crew leadership as well as the construction and maintenance of sustainable trails, including tool use and safety. You will also receive a Crew Leader Manual, a set of quick reference cards, and other materials to take home and refer to on the trail.
 
Please note this training includes a self-paced, online component prior to the workshop in order to maximize efficiency and on-the-ground coursework; the online course is provided in partnership with Colorado Mountain College. 
 
Why It Matters:
VOC Crew Leaders are the backbone of VOC projects. They educate new volunteers, lead crews in putting stewardship project plans into action, convey VOC’s mission to the community, and help ensure volunteers have a fun, safe, and rewarding experience! By pursuing a Crew Leader rank with VOC, you will expand our ability to perform high-quality stewardship work throughout Colorado.

About Outdoor Stewardship Institute (OSI)
Originally created in collaboration with other organizations, OSI offers affordable, in-depth training courses for volunteers and employees from any organization to learn or improve their stewardship skills and prepare for a variety of leadership roles. Approximately 300 people each year receive OSI training in topics such as volunteer crew leadership; trail design, construction, and maintenance; ecological, habitat, and fire restoration; crosscut saw skills and more. OSI is a program of Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC), the state’s oldest, largest, and leading outdoor stewardship nonprofit organization.
